In "Metzengerstein", Roger Vadim's first segment of this horror anthology based on short stories by Edgar Allan Poe, Contessa Frederique de Metzengerstein (Jane Fonda) keeps a cheetah cub as part of her menagerie.

Although it is clearly played by another big cat, as an indication of the passage of time (and used once to compliment Frederique's inner rage), the cheetah becomes fully grown as the story progresses.
A cat plays a small but important part in Paul Verhoeven's "Elle".
In the prologue to this comedy-mystery, a tuxedo cat stalks a caged canary but comes to a very nasty end.
The gratuitously lingering shot of the cat's hanging body paves the way for more violence to come but will deter most sane people from watching any more of Radley Metzger's remake.

With nearly 400 posts (and more than three times that number of screencaps and cat appearances noted), there are simply no more cats in horror movies and television left to celebrate.

Apart from one, that is: Ser Pounce from the excellent "Game of Thrones" TV series. One last feline actor of note, even if he doesn't really do anything. He's a cat, so what do you expect?

We did intentionally omit three movies (which have strikethroughs in the A-Z) due to the subject matter, but other bloggers have mentioned them recently and spared us from the unhappiness. Nobody wants to see cruelty to animals whether it's fake or not, certainly not us.

As this is the final post for a while, The Horror Cats wish to take this opportunity to give a long overdue shoutout to the other bloggers who share our obsession.

Linda Kay's Cinema Cats – http://www.cinemacats.com – has received the baton (not to mention the catnip mouse) and will continue to collect together the notable (and not so notable) feline actors in ALL genres of movies and television. It's a very entertaining and informative site. Check it out!

Anne Billson's Cats on Film – http://www.catsonfilm.net – hasn't been updated recently, but it's also full of interesting information and high-resolution pictures.

Additionally, there have been quite a few blog posts about cats in horror movies.

Our allies at The Horror Club have some "Horror Cats" articles:
Last, but certainly not least, is our good friend Nicholas Tana, the creator of Hell's Kitty – http://www.horrorcats.com and http://hellskitty.com – a fantastic horror-comedy webseries, comicbook, and upcoming movie featuring a possessed cat and her caregiver's struggle to find a girlfriend.
Since everyone already knows that the internet is powered by cats, there have been scores of YouTube videos, forum posts, Facebook groups, and now there's even a documentary dedicated to "Cats in Horror Movies" (as a special feature included in Arrow's Vincent Price blu-ray collection). It's certainly not like there aren't enough cats to go around!!!

It's great that so much interest still remains in this extremely niche subject. What's even better is that there may be a couple of new horror movies featuring cats in significant roles again eventually.

For now, however, we're feeling very tired. We're going to eat a bag of tuna treats, drink some milk, and snuggle down in our baskets.
These briefly shown feral cats aren't actors. They actually live in the Colosseum in Rome in real life.

Having pointed them out, Gabriella Francini (Diane Venora) reminds Stone Alexander (Noah Huntley) of the seemingly obvious historical fact that lions and tigers and Christians were all in the Colosseum two-thousand years ago.
Patrick Highsmith's cat Nathan is soon spotted by his potential housemate Holly Gooding (Drew Barrymore). At first, it looks like she doesn't like cats.

Once Patrick (George Newbern) explains that Nathan makes his own clothes and is mostly an outdoors cat, things seem to improve.

Sadly, Nathan's time enjoying the kitchen counter is not to last. A home video which shows two cats on top of a fence (before the black and white one is cuddled by its very young owner) sets the scene for things to come.

The black and white cat enjoys Christmas in more vintage footage.
In the present day, two ginger toms tuck into a pot roast dinner which is provided for them by a character known only as Woman (Kate Bosworth).
From the title of this cheesy erotic-thriller, you can be sure that there are plenty of cats and cat references throughout.

First, there's the laboratory cat whose brain cells are harvested by scientist Jacki (Maryam d'Abo) to cure Tom (Richard Grieco) of his inherited genetic illness.

Second, Tom's new girlfriend Imogen (Natalie Radford) shares a Siamese cat. Despite claiming, "I'm keeping the cat!" when she breaks up with Dale (Sean Orr), Imogen forgets to take the cat with her when she hurriedly packs her things and leaves Dale's house.

Last but not least, two black and white cats watch Tom and Imogen play a potentially deadly game of hide and seek in a lumber mill near the end. Tom hisses at the cats and gets a hiss back from one as a reply.

Although Tom's character and infidelity are reminiscent of Guillaume De Marchaux from The Twilight Zone's "Cat and Mouse" (1989) episode, the story is completely different. "Tomcat" is more of a Frankenstein-genre movie at its core.Dr Bloodhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17904860037603156527noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5838644518739886956.post-50910050671398633262015-08-04T22:03:00.000-04:002015-08-05T02:45:42.914-04:00Apaches (1977)

Unlike all the annoying children in this infamous British public information film from the late '70s, the farm cat remains completely unscathed during their game of hide and seek.
Although there are no more cats in it, you can watch the full public domain version of "Apaches" here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P0GyRz_lOQA.Dr Bloodhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17904860037603156527noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5838644518739886956.post-4523384296878114242015-08-03T14:28:00.000-04:002016-01-28T19:27:45.728-05:00Blacker Than the Night (1975)
Becker

Also known as "Más negro que la noche", this is the quintessential Mexican horror cats movie.

Directed by Carlos Enrique Taboada, the story features four very beautiful but annoyingly ailurophobic women who move into a creepy old house which one of them has inherited from her aunt.

Becker (or "Bequer"), whose fur is "blacker than the night" (hence the title), is an extremely important part of the many strange, bizarre, and often deadly supernatural events which occur.

(2002)

In this Thai supernatural thriller, after the chief of police jokingly asks the hotel ghost to reveal itself, a black cat provides a much needed jump scare by leaping out of nowhere, landing awkwardly in the centre of the dinner table, and of course, hissing.

Making a hasty escape through the hotel room window, the "ghost cat" leaves the puzzled guests and hotel owner to debate how it even got into the room in the first place. There are no trees nearby which it could have climbed and jumped from. Also, none of the hired workers owns a cat.

Having seemingly vanished into thin air, the cat is never seen again and makes no further appearances once it has leapt out of the hotel room window.
You simply can't have a visit to a zoo as a weak homage to "Cat People" (and its subtextual predatory warnings) unless you have a lion and a tiger there.
Amusingly, Chris (Spencer Treat Clark) doesn't use the opportunity to add "So are you!" when Nell (Ashley Bell) exclaims "She's beautiful!" about the white Bengal tiger.

Perhaps he's just being tactful. Nell doesn't have a good history with cats due to certain events in "The Last Exorcism" (2010).Dr Bloodhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17904860037603156527noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5838644518739886956.post-47451418412104713302015-07-29T03:07:00.000-04:002015-08-06T03:34:42.361-04:00The Gallows (2015)

The handheld policeman's camera at the end captures the important fact that nutty Pfeifer Ross (Pfeifer Brown) has a black and white cat in her bedroom.

The unconcerned cat watches Pfeifer's equally insane mother brush her daughter's hair as the shaky camera pans the room three times.
There are two cats in this movie. Not only does Catherine Martin (Brooke Smith) have a pet cat waiting at home for her, but Clarice Starling (Jodie Foster) is led to an important clue by the late Federica Bimmel's feline companion.

And no, the answer is not that Frederica was a great big fat person who loved cats. That bit is kind of obvious.
Ironically, after rescuing this mackerel tabby from being stepped on at a party, Joanna (Lindsay Wagner) later trips over him, falls into a swimming pool, and briefly drowns.
As no good deed goes unpunished, Joanna then has a near death experience which she is not supposed to come back from. She also hears the cat's cries in one of her dreams.
